I love taking my mat with me on vacation. Daily somatics, yoga, or simply meditating on the floor always makes a world of difference on how I feel on trips. It allows me to be regulated, have better, more fulfilling experiences, and it strongly decreases any kind of travel stress my body might go through.
Of course, throwing a rolled-up mat in the trunk of the car is easy, but what about when going by plane? Or even just in cases when you want to travel super light?
I’ve been aware of foldable yoga mats for a while but for some inexplicable reason put off purchasing one. This summer though, when my husband and I had a three-day trip to Mainz come up fairly spontaneously – one where we planned to take only hand luggage with us on the plane – it was time to take the step…and take it fast.

I dove into research and a listing on Amazon immediately caught my eye. The Primasole mat looked good and was ridiculously inexpensive, so of course it was a no-brainer. I figured even if it was just for one trip, that was more than enough for me…but reality had a bunch of pleasant surprises ready to throw my way when the mat actually arrived.
First of all, my suitcase is even a bit smaller than the standard hand luggage size and the mat fit inside perfectly.

Does it take up space? Yes. But it’s really not that much space to give up considering all the benefits bringing it with me on a trip delivers.
Second, the mat is grippy! I love, love, love to have a good grip when I’m doing yoga – and, honestly, this one feels even better under my hands and feet than my normal “at home” mat.
Third, it folds very easily and, from what I’ve experienced until now, it looks sturdy and well made enough to last a good while regardless of the folding creases. I was a bit concerned that it would be flimsy, but no, I have a feeling this darling will serve me for a very pleasing amount of time. Also important to note: the folds didn’t interfere with my practice at all, which is a massive bonus!

Fourth, yes it absolutely is narrower than your standard mat, but I personally had zero difficulty with the discrepancy in width. The most noticeable moment was probably during Savasana (and maybe a couple of other asanas where you claim a bit more space), but for me, again, hanging or stepping off the mat wasn’t really an issue because the mat supported me during my practices when I truly needed it.
Overall, if you’re looking for a nice, lightweight, portable mat that can even be transported in hand luggage, I’m absolutely giving my vote to this one.
I got it through Amazon DE so I’m linking that here: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0869PG46N
(I have noticed that it’s available in other Amazon stores as well, so if you’re in another location, it’s just a quick search away!)
To wrap things up, the mat is portable, lightweight, grippy, ridiculously inexpensive, and super pleasant to use. For sure a go-to for all my travels!
And one final bonus: take a look at my little yoga corner at the Hyatt in Mainz. Perfect spot, perfect mat. Superb vibes. Love it!
